Box Score 2 LAKELAND, Fla. – Southeastern softball split with Calumet College of St. Joseph today, losing first 2-1, then taking game two 8-0 in five innings.
The Crimson Wave's two runs in game one were off two solo shots in the second and sixth innings.
Brandee Pietrzak led off the Fire's last chance seventh with a double down the left field line then scored on an error that allowed
Sydnie Malloy to reach base simultaneously.
Three batters later, bases were loaded and there was just one out for
Brittany LaCasse. She grounded into a fielder's choice for the force out at home, then was called out at first in a collision that interfered with the double play attempt.
Alyssa Sansone notched the win for the Crimson Wave, throwing all seven innings while striking out six.
The Fire's
Lindsie Scholwinski started the season 0-1 after giving up three hits and striking out nine of 24 batters.
Annie Weaver was 1-for-3 with a triple.
Taylor Stoltz and Pietrzak also finished 1-for-3 with a double apiece while
Cat Maldonado and
Quynn Reddick were responsible for the remaining two Fire hits.
Maldonado bookended the eight runs in game two with a solo shot in the first and a two run bomb in the fourth to cap things off.
The Fire's five run second covered the rest.
Back-to-back singles from
Annie Weaver and
Alexandra Millett put the first two runners on with one out, then two consecutive walks scored Weaver. Millett scored next on a passed ball, then
Natalie Hughes sent an RBI single to shallow center for run three of the inning.
Stoltz and Girardin scored four and five on two throwing errors.
Senior
Emily Bryant secured the win, striking out two of 14 batter and giving up two hits in four innings.
Maldonado pitched the final inning and struck out one. She ended the game 2-for-3 at the plate with two homers.
Collectively, the Fire had eight hits and just two strike outs in 20 at bats.
The Fire are back in action on Tuesday at home in a double header against Eckerd College. The games are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
