GOSHEN, Ind.—A hot shooting night and a stifling defensive effort gave Southeastern an impressive 86-55 win at Goshen College to open up its women's basketball season.
The Fire scored the first 12 points of the game against the national semifinalists from a season ago, getting five points from
Alyssa Ramos and four from
Christin Strawbridge in the first five minutes of the quarter.
A 14-0 second quarter run pushed the Fire advantage to 27. During that three minute span, the Fire forced three turnovers, and finished the night having forced 17.
At halftime, Southeastern led 43-21.
The Fire connected on 16-of-31 field goals in the second half, which included a 6-of-11 effort from beyond the arc to cruise to victory.
Five players were in double figures, led by 20 points from
Bailey Hooker, who also had three assists, three blocks, and three steals. The senior connected on six of SEU's 10 3-pointers.
Christin Strawbridge had her first double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Jenny Dee added 12 points, as did
Ana Richter off the bench. Richter also hauled in seven rebounds and dished out a team-high five assists.
Sarah Green had 10 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and a block.
Goshen (3-3) was held to 28% from the field, and had five shots blocked.
The Fire return to the hardwood tomorrow afternoon against Grace College.
