Women's Soccer Tops Lions on Senior Day

Fire Uses Strong Start to Surpass Florida Memorial

Lakeland, Fla. – The 25th ranked Southeastern women's soccer team blanked the Florida Memorial University Lions 3-0 on Senior Day.

The Fire got on the board early, with freshman defender Konya Plummer finding fellow freshman Uchenna Kanu on a long through ball that Kanu finished inside the box. The score was Kanu's eighth goal through the first six games of her collegiate career. Despite not debuting until October 15th, the Abia, Nigeria native is tied for third in the Sun Conference in goals scored.

SEU added to its lead in the 27th minute on a ball that was blasted from 25 yards out by midfielder Soraya Martinez. The score was her second of the season. The Fire opened things up 3-0 in the 39th minute on a beautifully placed corner kick by freshman forward Rachel Wallace that was finished by freshman midfielder Bania Duran.

Southeastern took a 3-0 lead into the half. That lead proved to be enough to secure the victory for the Fire, as both teams were held scoreless in the second half.

It was business as usual for a dominant Fire defensive front. SEU held the Lions without a shot the entire match and recorded its 11th shutout of the season. The Fire only recorded 11 shutouts total from 2013-15.

Seniors Alyssa Kaminski, Rebecca Reynolds, Chloe Durham, Karly Palmar, Elle Bruno, and Ainsley Halliday were honored alongside their families prior to the game. As a senior class, they have played in a total of 241 games and have been responsible for 46 goals and 31 assists during their SEU careers.

"We have a very special group of seniors. They mean a lot to the program and they will be sorely missed…But we are excited that they are committed to coming back and remaining an active part of the program," shared Head Coach Randy Belli.

The Fire will close out the regular season on Monday as they travel to take on the Ave Maria University Gyrenes. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m.
