LAKELAND, Fla.—In front of a large crowd, the Fire football team posted its second straight Homecoming shutout, beating Point 45-0.
The Fire defense held the Skyhawks to 148 yards of total offense, with 75 of those coming on one play late in the fourth quarter. SEU stood strong and made a goal line stand to preserve the shutout.
"It was important to us to get the shut out for Coach (Chad) Adams," said senior defensive tackle
David Green. "We wanted to do that for him."
Southeastern (6-1, 4-0 TSC) went right down the field on its first possession following a 45-yard kickoff return by
Marque Northington. The Fire covered 45 yards on eight plays, capped off by a two-yard touchdown run by
Buddy Edwards.
Quarterback
Jonathan Pearce and running back
Jarrell Reynolds also added first quarter touchdown runs to take a 21-0 lead at the end of the first.
Reynolds had a stellar night, rushing for 205 yards on 10 carries and scored his second touchdown on a 78-yard run with 1:37 to go in the first half to give the Fire a 31-0 halftime lead.
In total, the Fire rushed for a total of 385 yards, and posted a grand total of 494 yards of offense on 68 plays.
"We had a great week of preparation and the offensive line was ready to play," said coach
Keith Barefield. "The backs knew where the holes were going to be and they hit them."
Green paced the defense with 11 tackles, 3.5 sacks, and five tackles for loss.
"David has been one of our top linemen ever since he came in," said Barefield. "He doesn't take a down off, he gives everything in practice, he's an inspiration to our players, and that's the way he plays every game."
The Fire defense also came away with three interceptions, and totaled 6.5 sacks.
Southeastern will be on the road at Webber International next week for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
