LAKELAND, Fla. – Fire women's basketball notched consecutive wins eight and nine last week over Ave Maria and Thomas to move to 14-3 on the season and 5-1 in The Sun Conference. They are currently tied for first in league play and look to maintain that advantage this week with games against Florida Memorial and Johnson & Wales.
The long ball buried Ave Maria on Tuesday as the Fire were 13-for-28 from beyond the arc in the 80-60 win.
Carlie Newman sunk five of her seven attempts for a total of 15 points on the night while
Ali Sanders led all Fire scorers with 19 points.
Christin Strawbridge followed up with 16 points and 10 boards, good for her third straight, and eighth double-double of the season.
She made it nine two days later in a 67-49 win over Thomas with 16 points and 12 boards.
Alyssa Ramos led all scorers in the same game with 17 points and an impressive 5-for-10 effort from beyond the arc.
In addition to holding the top spot in The Sun Conference standings, the Fire are first in points per game (72.18), field goal percentage (.432), and assists per game (17.94). The latter figure is good for eighth in NAIA Division II while the Fire also hold the eighth spot in 3-pointers per game with 8.94.
