Box Score LAKELAND, FLA. — If moral victories counted, the Fire would have earned their seventh win of the year. Instead, they take their second loss of the season despite a strong effort from their back line.
In the first half, the Fire (6-2) were outshot by the fourth-ranked Seahawks (7-1-1), 12-2 and 18-7 for the game. A goal in the 14th minute by Johanna Engberg—her Sun Conference-leading 11th goal of the season was the only offense either team could muster. Engberg's goal was assisted by Ebba Blomqvist.
Jessica McClernan was credited with 11 saves.
"Our back line was absolutely phenomenal. Unfortunately, one error against Engberg cost us the game," said coach Renee Lopez. "Heidi Ruth and Jamie Paton were absolutely phenomenal and were very effective as well as McClernan. I'm very pleased with the effort our girls had against one of the top teams in the conference."
The Fire are back in action Saturday as they host the Johnson and Wales University Wildcats. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
