Corey Mills netted his second goal as a member of the Fire men's soccer squad, helping SEU knock off Keiser University 1-0 in its first Sun Conference match of the year.
Mills' goal came in the 68
th minute of play, and was assisted by
Nick Wilson, who sent the ball in from the right side and gave Mills the opportunity to finish as he raced down the center of the field.
"All week we felt if we played good combination and could get through, a goal would happen," said coach
Clay Roberts. "I thought it was our best game of the year so far in closing out a good, physical game."
The Seahawks (3-6-1, 2-1 TSC) were the aggressors early on, finishing the first half with eight shots, to Southeastern's four. Fire keeper Jorge Navarette made two saves in the first 45 minutes.
"They are a very direct team and a very talented team, so we tried to defend the first ball and clean up the second ball rather than try to defend the direct pass," said Roberts of the defensive strategy.
The shots were even at three apiece in the second half, with Navarette making stops on all three.
"Tonight was a great test, very proud of our team, they executed the game plan exactly how we wanted and deserved to win," said Roberts.
The Fire return to action at home Saturday night when they host Johnson and Wales University for a 7:30 p.m. start.
