Box Score LAKELAND, Fla.—The Southeastern defense limited the Concordia Hornets to just 281 yards on 80 plays, had four takeaways, and a safety in a 37-7 win.
The Fire offense started the night with a three-and-out, but on Concordia's second play on offense,
Treshez Ellzey scored his second defensive touchdown in as many weeks, scooping up a bad snap and racing 15 yards for the game's opening score at the 13:29 mark.
Mark Myers picked off a pass on the first play of the next drive, but the Fire (3-1) were unable to capitalize, going three-and-out again. However, the Fire recovered a fumble on the ensuing punt, and turned it into a
Jarrell Reynolds 3-yard touchdown run with 11:13 left in the first.
"I felt our whole defense played well overall," said coach
Keith Barefield. "Our offense had way too many three-and-outs and definitely have to get better."
On a 3
rd-and-10 play, quarterback
Railond Garrett scrambled for a 34-yard touchdown to put the Fire up three scores. Garrett then found
DeVonte Mack with a 5-yard touchdown pass with 55 seconds left in the first to put SEU up 28-0.
With 7:27 left in the second quarter, a lightning strike suspended play for 30 minutes. Concordia (0-4) got its only score of the game on an 83-yard touchdown pass from William Jordan to Jareth Embry with 49 seconds left in the half.
Garrett found
Jordan Phillips on third down with 11:45 left in the third quarter for a new school record 90-yard touchdown pass. The defense stopped Hornet running back Alexander Montgomery in the end zone at the 3:16 mark of the third to seal the night.
Will Tillo led the defense with a new school record 15 tackles, 3.5 for loss, and had an interception.
Robert Greathouse added eight tackles, four for loss.
Garrett finished the night 13-of-25 passing for 195 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception.
Jonathan Pearce returned to action after leaving the Faulkner game with an injury and completed three of his eight passes for 36 yards.
Six different receivers caught passes, with
Dakota Duron snagging five for 30 yards. Phillips had 119 yards on three catches.
The Fire return to action on October 3
rd when they head to Jacksonville to take on Edward Waters in a Sun Conference contest.
