Box Score LAKELAND, Fla. – The Southeastern men's soccer team kicked off the 2015 season with a 7-1 win over the Trinity Baptist Eagles this evening.
The Fire got off to a slow start after two lightning delays set the contest back two and half hours. Just over five minutes into play, the NCCAA DII Eagles netted their first and only goal to take a 1-0 lead.
Pedro Ivo Dias scored the Fire's first goal of the season 34 second later with an assist from
Trent Kiger to knot the game at one.
The score remained even through the half until the 50
th minute when freshman
Grayson Wilkes found the back of the net for the go-ahead; the first goal of his college career.
Senior midfielder
Christian Bores contributed his first of two in the 59
th minute after Kiger arched the ball from midfield to put him head-to-head with the keeper. No more than three touches later, the Fire were up 3-1.
Goals four and five belonged to freshman
Jonathan Jimenez. His first collegiate goal occurred in the 71
st minute of play with an assist from
Gerritson Craane. Just under seven minutes later he made it 5-1, this time from fellow freshman,
Jacob Wendel.
Bores' second of the night occurred in the 79
th minute, putting the Fire on top 6-1, then, with a minute to spare,
Nick Wilson capped it off with the Fire's seventh and final goal.
"We had a slow start defensively, but I'm excited about opening night and being able to get a lot of guys on the field," said Coach
Clay Roberts. "All but two active players got in the game and the level didn't change at all which proves our depth. As teams fatigue, we stay strong and sharp and that's when the goals are scored. I'm really proud of their effort tonight."
The Fire take the pitch again on Thursday in South Carolina against Columbia International University. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
