Box Score WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Before game two of the scheduled double header against Northwood was called for rain, Southeastern softball took game one from the Seahawks 9-1 in five innings and moved to 12-1 in TSC play.
An RBI single by Cat Maldonado scored Annie Weaver who singled in the leadoff spot to give the Fire an early advantage. Then, a rare 6-3-5 double play by the Fire in the bottom of the first secured their lead after one.
The Seahawks knotted the score in the bottom of the second, but Southeastern answered with three runs in the third on Maldonado's second RBI single of the game and a two run single by Brandee Pietrzak.
The Fire put up their final five runs on two outs in the top of the fourth. Brittany LaCasse ignited the scoring with an RBI single that crossed Bri Girardin who singled earlier in the inning. Then Maldonado sent her 16th home run of the year deep over the left-center fence for runs six and seven.
A few Seahawks defensive changes, including a new arm, didn't stop the Fire from scoring two more. Anna Martin, who doubled following Maldonado's homer, scored on an error then Brandee Pietrzak's second RBI single made it 9-1.
The fifth inning was scoreless with the last out of the day belonging to Fire catcher Brianna Perez who gunned down a steal attempt from first.
Susan Hinks earned the win, tossing three of five and giving up just three hits and a run while striking out two. Emily Bryant topped off the final two innings giving up just one hit.
Maldonado was 3-for-3 on the day with a home run and four RBI's while Pietrzak was 2-for-3 with three RBI's
The Fire remain on the road as they prepare to take on St. Thomas University in Miami Gardens, Florida tomorrow at 1 and 3 p.m.
