Box Score 2 LAKE WALES, Fla. – The Fire moved to 7-1 in The Sun Conference today with a pair of wins over the Warner Royals. They took game one 11-2 in five innings to mark their 30th win of the season, then completed the sweep with a 6-2 win.
In the first inning of game one Southeastern batted around and then some to take an early eight run lead.
With two outs, Sam Gale notched a two run double that scored Annie Weaver, who singled to lead off the inning, and Brittany LaCasse, who reached on a fielding error. Katie Dickey followed with a two run single then Emily Bryant mimicked with an RBI single to right.
The Royals made a pitching change after Bri Girardin was walked. Weaver stepped up to the challenge of facing two different pitchers in the same inning by sending an RBI single to right center field. LaCasse followed with a two run double to put the Fire up 8-0.
After their offensive marathon, the Fire defense finally got some reps but gave up a run on two hits and an error.
The second inning was scoreless then each team scored a single run in the third to make it 9-2 heading into the fourth.
Cat Maldonado led off the inning with a double to left, then with one out Gale sent an RBI double through the left side. Girardin rounded out the inning with an RBI single.
The Fire found themselves in a bit of a dilemma in the bottom of the fourth with bases loaded and no outs, but managed it flawlessly with a force at home then a 5-2-3 double play to end the inning.
Maldonado pitched all five innings giving up two earned runs on seven hits and a walk. With the win, she moved to 6-1 on the season.
The Fire got off to a slower start in game two, scattering three runs through six innings with RBI singles by Gale in the second, Anna Martin in the third and Brandee Pietrzak in the sixth.
Defense was the highlight of the game as Southeastern recorded three 1-2-3 half innings and three double plays. Gale tossed six shutout innings and earned the win giving up just two hits and two walks.
The bats made a comeback in the top of the seventh when the Fire doubled their lead with an RBI double by Weaver and a two run bomb to left by Maldonado.
Bryant took over in the bottom, giving up two runs on three hits, but the Royals efforts were cut short by a fly out to left to end the game.
Weaver was 5-for-8 on the day with three RBI's and three runs scored while Gale went 3-for-6 with four RBI's and two runs scored.
The Fire are set to host Thomas University on Friday in a double header beginning at 1 p.m.
