Box Score 2 COCOA, Fla. – Day one in Cocoa didn't end in the Fire's favor as they fell twice, first to Madonna University of Michigan, 6-3, then to Cardinal Stritch University of Wisconsin, 11-5.
Madonna pitcher Bree Crampton recorded three of her seven strikeouts in the top of the first, retiring the first three Fire hitters. Then, three runs on two hits and a Fire error put Madonna up 3-0 after one.
The score remained the same through three until Sam Gale singled to cross Brianna Perez in the top of the fourth.
Madonna scored again in the bottom of the fifth to go up 4-1, then each team scored two apiece in the sixth to post the final score.
The Fire were outhit 10 to five and committed two errors.
Susan Hinks suffered the loss from the mound and moved to 6-3. She gave up six runs on 10 hits and struck out four.
In game two, Kati Herberg of Cardinal Stritch hit a bases loaded triple, putting them up 3-0 in the top of the second. The same half inning was home to seven of their 14 hits.
The deficit was doubled in the fourth then tripled in the sixth with three Cardinal Stritch runs in the top of each to put them up 9-0 after five and a half.
The Fire offense finally responded in the bottom of the sixth scoring two on an RBI double by Anna Martin and an RBI single by Emily Bryant.
Cardinal Stritch matched in the top of the seventh to make the score 11-2 heading into the Fire's last chance.
With two outs and one on, Brittany LaCasse decided she wasn't going out without a bang, literally, when she homered to left for runs three and four. Cat Maldonado followed suit with a solo shot over the same fence, but their efforts were deemed too-little-too-late as the following batter grounded out to end the game.
Gale took the hit on the mound, allowing six earned runs on 11 hits and striking out two. She is now 3-3.
The Fire will complete their spring break schedule tomorrow as they take on Concordia of Chicago at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
