Fire Sweep Gyrenes in TSC Opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

AVE MARIA, Fla. – The Fire kicked off Sun Conference play this afternoon with a sweep of the Ave Maria Gyrenes. They squeaked by with a 1-0 victory to start the day, then took game two 6-4.

Susan Hinks was the key in game one; tossing a five hitter in seven innings, and recording the only RBI in the top of the fifth that gave the Fire the edge. The win marked her 12th of the season.

The Fire recorded just four hits in game one and both teams were perfect on defense.

The cobwebs were dusted off by game two as each team doubled their hit count and crossed a combined ten runs with the Fire coming out on top by two.

A five run second inning gave the Fire an early lead over the Gyrenes that they were never able to overcome. Hinks generated the first run once again with an RBI single to score Sam Gale who singled to lead off the inning. Runs two through five were ruled unearned due to three Gyrene fielding errors.

The Gyrenes scored their first two runs of the day in the bottom of the third to narrow the deficit to three, but the Fire answered the following inning with an RBI double by Brittany LaCasse to go up 6-2.

The final two runs of the day belonged to the Gyrenes in the bottom of the sixth, but their offensive efforts fell short in the seventh to seal their second TSC loss of the season.

Cat Maldonado remained undefeated on the mound with her sixth win of the season. She threw five innings and gave up two earned runs on five hits while striking out one.

The Fire host their neighboring TSC rival, Webber International University, on Wednesday for a double header beginning at 2 p.m.
