Box Score 2 LAKELAND, Fla.—It was quite the turn of events for the Fire softball team this afternoon during a doubleheader against William Woods University.
After scoring with ease last week, the Fire struggled at the plate, dropping a 2-0 decision to the Owls in the first game, and trailed 6-2 heading to the bottom of the seventh.
A bases-loaded, two-out double by Cat Maldonado brought the Fire within a run, then a home run by Anna Martin gave the Fire a 7-6 win in game two.
The first two runs in game two came in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run homer by Martin, putting SEU up 2-1. The Owls retaliated with three runs on two hits to take a 4-2 lead. A leadoff home run by WWU in the top of the sixth made it 5-2, then added another run in the top of the seventh on an RBI double.
In the SEU seventh, Kaleigh Floyd led off the inning with a single, and was followed with a single by Susan Hinks. Following back-to-back fly outs, Brittany LaCasse drew a walk to load the bases for Maldonado.
Hinks earned the win to improve to 11-5 on the season, after taking the loss in Game 1. Hinks worked 2.2 innings in relief, allowing one earned run on four hits.
The Fire had plenty of opportunities in Game 1, stranding 11 base runners. Their best chance came in the bottom of the fifth, loading the bases with nobody out, but the inning was ended after a strike out, then an unassisted double play following a lineout to first base.
Brandee Pietrzak and Annie Weaver each had two hits in the contest.
The Fire begin Sun Conference play on Saturday when they travel to Ave Maria for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
