Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. – The Fire moved to 4-2 on the season today with a pair of wins over Point and Coastal Georgia. They shutout Point, 8-0 in five innings, then 10-runned Coastal Georgia, 15-5, in six.
In game one, Cat Maldonado, who went 2-for-2, recorded the first hit for the Fire in the bottom of the first with a two-run homer over the left field fence to go up 2-0.
A three up-three down top of the second put Susan Hinks at leadoff. With the count full, she sent a solo bomb over the right field fence for the Fire's second hit of the game, second home run of the game, and a 3-0 lead.
Two quick outs in the bottom of the third set the Fire up for a three-hit, five-run two out rally. Maldonado and Anna Martin hit back-to-back singles and Brandee Pietrzak walked to load the bases. Hinks walked next to score Maldonado.
What looked to be a single run situation turned into two when Coach Anna Welsh caught the Skyhawks off guard and sent Martin home for a stolen base and the second run of the inning. In the same moment, Pietrzak stole third and Hinks stole second to set Sam Gale up for a three-run homer to put the Fire up 8-0.
Gale posts the win for the Fire, pitching four out of five innings while giving up just one hit and striking out one Point batter. At the plate, she went 1-2 with a home run and three RBI's.
As visitors against Coastal Georgia, the Fire put up four runs on five hits in the top of the first, but the Mariners evened the score at four after one full inning of play.
The Fire scored at least one run in each of the remaining innings, putting up two in the fourth and an impressive six in the sixth.
Back-to-back outs forced the Fire to rally with only one life left. Hinks started the rally with a double down the left field line. Then Gale hit an RBI double followed by a two-run Anna Weaver single. An RBI single by Brittany LaCasse and a two-run Maldonado double would end the Fire scoring, up 15-5 after five and a half innings.
The Mariners scored their fifth run in the bottom of the fourth on a fielder's choice.
Win number two was credited to Hinks who gave up five runs on six hits and had three strike outs.
In the two games combined, Maldonado went 6-7 at the plate with a home run, three doubles, two singles and seven RBI's.
The Fire take the field again on February 14th for a double header against Calumet College of St. Joseph. Games are scheduled for 10 a.m. and 12 p.m.
