Box Score 2 ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.- It was a tough start to the 2015 season for Fire softball, dropping both games of their doubleheader against NCAA Division II Eckerd 2-1, and 14-5 in five innings.
In the first game, the Fire were held to just three hits, two of which came in the top of the seventh, when they trailed 1-0. Brittany LaCasse started the inning with a double, and came around to score on a two-out RBI single by Cat Maldonado to tie the game.
The Tritons won the game on a walk-off RBI single with the bases loaded. Susan Hinks worked six innings, allowing seven hits, two walks, two runs, and recorded a strikeout.
In the second game, the Tritons jumped out to an 8-0 lead with a seven-run second inning, in which it sent 10 to the plate and was helped by a pair of Fire errors. In the top of the third, Southeastern bounced back with three runs when Kayle Mullenix led off with a single, then was brought around to score on an RBI double by LaCasse. LaCasse scored on an RBI single by Brandee Pietrzak. Then, it was Anna Martin's turn to keep the rally going with an RBI single to cut the deficit to five.
An additional two errors by SEU in the bottom of the third helped Eckerd come up with four more runs, and take a 12-3 lead. The Fire were able to add two more when Kaleigh Floyd hit an RBI single to score Annie Weaver, and another RBI single by LaCasse scored Floyd.
The Tritons secured the game with two runs in the fourth, then retired the Fire 1-2-3 in the top of the fifth.
LaCasse was the key catalyst, going 4-for-5 with two runs scored, and drove in a pair. Maldonado was 4-for-5 as well, with an RBI.
The Fire return to action on Friday when they travel to the Clermont, Florida to take on Point and Middle Georgia State.
