Softball Drops Two to Davenport

LAKELAND, Fla. – The Fire suffered their fourth and fifth losses of the season this afternoon, both ending 8-3 in the favor of Davenport University.

Game one was scoreless through the fifth with the Panthers outhitting the Fire three to one.

In the top of the sixth, the Panthers took a 2-0 lead on two hits and one of five Fire errors.

The Fire gained their only lead on one swing by Anna Martin as she sent a 2-1 pitch over the left field fence to score Annie Weaver and Brianna Perez.

Six additional Panther runs on three hits and three errors in the top of the seventh put them up 8-3. The Fire failed to answer in the bottom.

Davenport sophomore Emily Maves recorded the win. In seven complete innings, she allowed three earned runs on four hits and struck out five Fire batters.

Susan Hinks suffered the loss and moves to 4-2 as she allowed four earned runs on eight hits.

In game two, the Panthers put a run up in both the first and third innings, then three in the fourth followed by an additional three in the sixth for an 8-0 lead after five and a half.

The Fire chipped away in the bottom of the sixth to narrow the deficit to five and avoid a six inning shutout, but a scoreless seventh deemed 8-3 the final score.

Panther pitcher Alyssa Eastman earned the win allowing three earned runs on two hits and striking out four.

Sam Gale took the loss, moving to 2-2 from the mound.

The Fire take the field again on Saturday as they take on Edward Waters at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. in Lakeland.
