Hinks No-Hitter; Fire Bats Take Two from EWC

ACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Fire added two to the win column today, moving to 7-3 and outscoring the Tigers of Edward Waters College 28-2 in two five inning games. The first ended 15-1 followed by a 13-1 victory to end the day.

Game one was a game of firsts for two Fire freshman. On the defensive end, Susan Hinks tossed her first collegiate no-hitter, striking out four batters and giving up a single earned run. To date, she is an impressive 4-1 on the mound.

At the plate, Brandee Pietrzak hit her first collegiate home run. Her two-run bomb over the left field fence in the top of the fourth scored the Fire's eleventh and twelfth runs of game one. She finished the game 3-for-3 with a double, a home run and four RBI's.

Fire bats were hot from the start, scoring four quick runs on four hits in the top of the first.

A scoreless second led way to an additional three Fire runs in the top of the third. With two outs, Anna Martin and Pietrzak hit back-to-back singles before Sam Gale sent an 0-1 pitch over the left field fence to put the Fire up 7-0.

Martin and Pietrzak teamed up once again to cross another five in the top of the fourth. A bases loaded double down the left field line by Martin scored three then Pietrzak followed with a two-run homer to left.

The Tigers scored their lone run in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly that crossed Rebecca Rivers who walked to start the inning.

Another three runs on two hits and three Tiger errors finished the scoring in game one.

Between seven batters, the Fire notched 13 hits including two doubles and two home runs.

Game two kicked off to the same tune, this time with a grand slam by Gale, her second dinger of the day, to put the Fire up 4-0 on three hits.

The Tigers answered with one in the bottom on an RBI double and held the Fire scoreless in the second.

The Fire answered with three runs on three hits and a Tiger error in the third, but their most productive inning was still to come.

With one on and one out in the fourth, Cat Maldonado sent the ball sailing over the center field fence scoring Annie Weaver who hit a leadoff single. Then, on a 0-2 count, Martin followed suit, this time to left, with her second home run of the season. RBI singles by Kaleigh Floyd and Bri Girardin and an RBI double by Briana Perez completed the day's scoring.

Emily Bryant pitched all five innings for the Fire and moves to 1-1 on the season.

Matching their efforts in game one, the Fire had 13 hits including three doubles, two home runs, and a grand slam.

The Fire return home to prepare for their next games on Tuesday, February 24th when they will take on Davenport University of Grand Rapids, Michigan at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
