Softball Splits with Calumet in Home Opener

LAKELAND, Fla. – In the Fire's first home games of the 2015 season, they split with Calumet College of St. Joseph, taking the first 9-3, and falling in the second, 7-2.

In game one, Calumet took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-out home run to left, to which the Fire had no answer.

After a scoreless second, the Fire narrowed the deficit to two in the bottom of the third with an RBI single by Annie Weaver that crossed Sam Silver.

Anna Martin evened the score at three in the bottom of the fourth went she sent the ball sailing over the left field fence with no outs and one on.

The Fire went up 9-3 in the bottom of the sixth, scoring five runs on no outs. In the same inning, they recorded seven of their 13 hits, including a two-run triple by Weaver who went 2-for-4 in game one.

Susan Hinks notched the win and improved to 3-1 on the season. Pitching all seven innings, she struck out four Calumet hitters while giving up three earned runs on three hits. All three hits came in the first two innings of play.

In game two, two Calumet runs in the top of the second followed by another in the top of the third put them up 3-0 after two and a half.

A sac squeeze executed by Brittany LaCasse in the bottom of the third finally put the Fire on the board, trailing 3-1.

Four Fire errors plagued the top of the fourth inning. Calumet pocketed three unearned runs on just one hit to go up 6-1. Another run in the fifth and a single Fire run in the sixth, put the final score, 7-2, on display.

Calumet pitcher Alyssa Sansone earns the win allowing seven hits and two earned runs. Sam Gale records her first loss of the season, tossing five of seven innings, giving up four earned runs on five hits and striking out four.

The Fire move to 5-3 on the season and travel to Jacksonville on Monday to take on Edward Waters College at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
