Women's Basketball Gears Up For Sun Conference Play

LAKELAND, FLA.-- The Southeastern women's basketball team went on a roadtrip that would be a good gut check for the team, as a trio of NCAA Division II squads awaited them.

Flagler College was the first opponent to host SEU, and the Fire did not disappoint.  The Fire pulled out a 73-65 victory in St. Augustine; Christin Strawbridge recorded a double-double, scoring 21 points and bringing down 17 boards.

Two days later, the team traveled up to Fort Valley, Georgia where the Fort Valley State University Wildcats.  The Fire passed that test as well, winning the contest 61-49.  Alyssa Ramos was the lead scorer of the game, as the guard scored 23 points on 7-13 FG shooting.

The last game of the roadtrip involved a stop in Americus, Georgia to play the Georgia Southwestern State University Canes.  SEU couldn't complete the perfect trip, as the Canes handed the Fire their first loss of the season by a score of 83-66.  Carlie Newman had her best game of the season so far, as she recorded 16 points and eight rebounds.

The Fire will look to get back in the win column, and this week is the perfect time to do so.  SEU is scheduled to play its first two Sun Conference games of the season.  On Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., they'll host the Webber International University Warriors, and on Saturday, they'll travel down to Miami Gardens to take on Johnson & Wales University at 2 p.m.

Webber is 3-4 so far this season, most recently falling to NCAA Division II Florida Tech.  The Warriors feature a couple of double-digit scorers; senior Deslyn Applewhite averages 12.1 PPG and senior Mar'Lisa Braxton averages 11.7 PPG.  Junior Quantavia Stallworth averages 9.8 PPG and a team-leading 6.7 RPG.

The Wildcats of Johnson & Wales have gotten off to a rocky start to the season, as they have yet to record a win.  Their 0-4 record has come courtesy of Taylor University, Edward Waters, University of Puerto Rico, and Barry University.

JWU features a young team, as freshman Sabrina Verdes leads the team in scoring with 12 PPG.  Freshman Nicole Dixon averages 10 PPG and Rodtavia McCall leads the team with six RPG.

In five games this year, the Fire are fifth in NAIA Division II in defensive rebounds per game (33.2 RPG) and total rebounds per game (47.6).
