LAKELAND, Fla.—In its final game of its second season, the Fire of Southeastern University went out with a bang, knocking off UGC by the score of 86-0.
The Fire were dominant in all phases of the game, outgaining UGC 589-10, and limiting the Disciples to just seven first downs.
Prior to the contest, the five Fire seniors;
Larry Correa,
Dakota Duron,
Tyrell Green,
Johnathan Hicks, and
Alex Mack were honored for their contributions over the past two season. "When you finish two years at 17-5, these guys have helped us establish something here and we appreciate their efforts on and off the field," said coach
Keith Barefield.
Duron ended his college career in grand fashion, catching a pair of passes for 55 yards, including a 31-yard touchdown. He also rushed for 49 yards and a touchdown, and nearly threw a touchdown pass on the first play from scrimmage, but the ball was just beyond the reach of junior
Michael Wheary.
The first score of the game came from the Fire defense. Following a turnover,
James Swain Jr. intercepted a Donovan King pass and took it 30 yards for a touchdown.
The next four touchdowns came from redshirt sophomore running back
Jarrell Reynolds, who scored on runs of 1-, 2-, 1-, and 8-yards. He finished the night with a game-high 101 yards on 15 carries.
In relief of starting quarterback
Railond Garrett,
Jacob Carter kept the offense moving in the second quarter, rushing for a 7-yard touchdown, then connecting with Wheary for a 23-yard strike, then with Duron to give the Fire a 56-0 lead at the half.
Carter finished the night 8-of-9 passing for 168 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. He rushed for another touchdown from 21-yards out in the third quarter to put the Fire up 72-0. Carter also rushed for 49 yards.
"This was a great opportunity for a lot of guys to play, and they distinguished themselves well," said Barefield. "We got some film to evaluate them, and take a look at going forward."
Lorine Parker added a 1-yard touchdown run to the effort, and Brian Sannon also found the end zone on a 20-yard run in the fourth quarter, finishing the night with 62 yards on six carries.
The Fire finish their second season at 9-2, which included a 4-1 Sun Conference record.
"These guys showed maturity by fighting back the way they did after our loss a few weeks ago," said Barefield. "A lot of teams would have folded up and wouldn't have been able to win out like we did, and I hope carries over to next year."
