Football Closes Conference Play with Win over Webber

Box Score The Southeastern University Fire recovered from last week's loss with a dominate display over county rival Webber International in a 35–21 win over the Warriors in their return to Victory Field.

With the win, the Fire end their conference schedule with a 4-1 record, and are 7-2 overall heading into the final non-conference games of the year.

The Warriors were the first on the board when Brendan DeShields carried the ball in from 28 yards out, giving them the lead early.  The next drive, SEU quarterback Railond Garrett found receiver DeVonte Mack on a slant route, and good for a score to tie the game going into the second quarter.

After Webber was held to no gain in the first complete drive of the second quarter, Mark Myers returned the ensuing punt for a score.  Later on in the same quarter, the Fire offense would pull off a double reverse flea flicker and launched the ball into the end zone only to be caught by Michael Wheary, who was able to get the score despite being subject to triple coverage.  The score headed into the locker rooms at halftime was 21–7 in favor of Southeastern.

The third quarter would see a quick score thanks to the defensive unit, when Tyrell Green hauled in a pick-six for a score.  During the next drive, Webber would take eight plays to covert a score of their own, in the hands of Tyler Modlin on a seven yard pass from Garry Chouloute. As the third quarter winded down, Southeastern's Blade Denmark would block a punt that set the Fire up with three yards to go and, eventually, the first score of the fourth quarter.

The first drive of the Warriors would see Darius Page carry a score in, only for it to be nullified by two offensive penalties.  The Southeastern defense would continue to apply pressure to a frazzled offensive effort, and eventually force a fumble that would be recovered by defensive player Alex Mack.  The Warriors would find the end zone one additional time in the game, on a short carry for Page.  The Warriors, in a final effort to produce a score, would go for a fourth and long conversion that would not be enough and turn the ball over on downs, giving Southeastern the ball with around 3:00 minutes remaining, which would almost be enough to stall until the end of the game.  The Warriors would have 23 seconds left to try to put together a miracle drive, but would ultimately come up short by 11 yards and 14 points.

The Fire were able to do more with less, having only 262 yards of offense compared to the Warrior's 380.   The Fire, on defense, were able to outperform the warriors and produce 3 sacks for 39 yards of loss.  Both defense and special teams units were able to produce scores.  "It was good to see our players learn from last week, and come out on top tonight," said coach Keith Barefield.   "We took care of the ball better this time, and it was good to see us score in every phase of the game."

The Fire are on the road next week as they travel to South Carolina to take on Benedict College in the home stretch of the season.
