Box Score BABSON PARK, Fla. – The Fire staged a dramatic second half comeback to force overtime this evening, but couldn't hold on as their six game win streak ended in a loss to Webber International, 72-69.
The first twenty minutes were nothing to write home about as the Fire only finished on 33% of their attempts from the field while the Warriors hit an impressive 53%. Poor accuracy along with twelve turnovers and lack luster defense put the Fire at a 17 point deficit at half, down 41-24.
The Fire put on a show in the second half, chipping away at the margin as Warrior fans were forced to the edge of their seats.
Down 10 points with 6:57 to play, the Fire went on an 11-2 run to narrow the deficit to one at 59-58. The Warriors would pull ahead by three with seconds remaining, but a Carlie Newman 3-pointer with ten seconds on the clock sent the game into overtime, tied at 63.
The Fire couldn't hang on in the final five minutes, never gaining the lead and falling by three at the final buzzer.
"Even though we executed in the second half, turnovers and their offensive rebounds are what did us in," said Coach Jody Martinez. "We have to learn how important possessions are and how to take care of the ball against Webber."
Carlie Newman led the Fire with 17 points and nine rebounds followed by Tiara Young who finished the night with 16 points. Cassidy Block and Alyssa Ramos also finished in double digits with 10 and 11 points, respectively.
Leading the way for the Warriors LaQuandra Brazill with 19 points and Jessica Colson who had 18 points and was six for nine from beyond the arc.
The Fire hit the road to Miami Gardens on Thursday to take on Florida Memorial. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
