Huge Second Half Helps Men’s Basketball Down Florida National

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- After 20 minutes of play, the Fire were in a 38-38 deadlock with Florida National University in their first game of the Chuck Daly Memorial Tournament at Northwood University.

During the second 20 minutes, the Fire ran away from the Conquistadors.

SEU used a 23-8 run to come away with a 100-79 win over Florida National to move to 6-3 on the season.

In the second half, the Fire were 73% from the field, hit seven of their 10 3-point attempts, and outrebounded FNU 24-15.

Southeastern led 57-52 with 14:20 to play, the Fire went on their long run to build an 80-60 lead with 7:33 to play. Xavier Burrow scored eight of the team's points during the run, connecting on a pair of 3-pointers. They took their biggest lead of the night with 2:48 left after Larry Taylor hit back-to-back layups to give SEU a 95-73 advantage.

In the first half, the Fire found themselves down 23-19 with 7:46 left, but a dunk by Tim Mitchell with 6:15 left put Southeastern back on top, setting up a back-and-forth finish to the first half. Jordan Talley gave the Fire a two-point lead by hitting a free throw with 52 seconds left. FNU answered with a layup with 23 seconds to go to tie the game for the seventh time heading to the half.

Senior Andre' Winston led all scorers with 22 points. He also added five rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Tim Mitchell recorded his fifth double-double of the year with 20 points and 12 rebounds. The senior added three assists and three blocks in 27 minutes of play. Caleb Konieczny (15) and Burrow (13) were also in double figures for the Fire.

Next up for the Fire is Concordia University of Montreal tomorrow at 5 p.m. at Northwood.
