Fire Score First Conference Win

Box Score

LAKELAND, FL — The Southeastern University volleyball team opened Sun Conference Play by sweeping the Florida Memorial University Lions (0-6, 0-2) for the second time in two weeks. The Fire (6-3, 1-0) overcame some sloppy play in the first set only to dominate the last two frames.

In the first set, the Lions came out strong and held a small lead for the majority of the frame, leading 18-15, but the Fire were able to bounce back and take the first set from the Lions, 26-24.

After that, the Fire found their rhythm and took care of business the rest of the way, winning the second and third sets by scores of 25-13 and 25-12, respectively.

"As the game went on we realized we really have to focus; we have to play our game and not focus on what they're doing," remarked Coach Audrey Gilbert.

Madeline Hanshaw and Lydia Rooth lead the way for SEU, racking up 11 kills each. Sophomore Brianna Lakman scored seven kills while maintaining an incredible .875 attacking percentage. Rooth and Alyssa Prescott each served up an ace as well.

"Brianna really stepped up. As one of the youngest players on the team, she has passion for the team and wants to win for the team."

The Fire are back at it again tomorrow at noon in a crucial Sun Conference matchup, as they host St. Thomas University at noon.
