PHOENIX, Ariz.- Former Southeastern University men's basketball player Mitchell Wiggins was one of seven selections by the Harlem Globetrotters during their eighth annual player draft today.
Wiggins was selected along with his brother Nick, who played at Wichita State last season. Mitchell finished second in the NAIA Slam Dunk Contest, and helped the Fire to a 27-7 record, and an appearance in the national semifinals.
"We like to think outside the box with our draft, so we look at all different kinds of athletes that could have the qualities of a Harlem Globetrotter," said Sweet Lou Dunbar, the Globetrotters' director of player personnel.
Other selections include NCAA Division I dunk champion Marcus Lewis of Eastern Kentucky, NAIA dunk champion Tyler Inman of Southwestern Christian University, 7-foot-5 Sim Bhullar of New Mexico State, pro soccer player Landon Donovan, and former Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel.
"There are a lot of outstanding dunkers on this list, the Wiggins brothers come from a great bloodline, Sim Bhullar is a mountain of a man that can put the ball in the hole … and certainly keep others from doing so, we know Landon Donovan can handle a ball, and we also know that Johnny Manziel is a fantastic athlete that knows how to be entertaining," said Dunbar.
The players that were drafted can come to the team's mini-camp in August. Training Camp begins at the end of September, and the team opens their North American tour on December 26th.
