Men’s Basketball Opens Conference Play with Road Win

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla.- A fast start on the road gave Southeastern its first Sun Conference win of the season, taking an 81-75 win over St. Thomas.

The Fire (3-1, 1-0) hit an impressive 57% from the field in the first half, and went 3-of-5 from 3-point range, and knocked down 10 of their 12 free throws en route to a 37-28 lead at the intermission. The biggest lead the visitors saw was 16, with 11:56 remaining in the first when Dana Thomas' basket put his team up 24-8.

St. Thomas battled back in the second half, using a 9-1 run to come within two (56-54) with 10:56 to play, and took a one-point lead (59-58) with 9:15 left. The Bobcat lead expanded to five with 4:20 left after Michael Walker's fast break basket put the hosts up 72-67.

Baskets by Andre' Winston and Thomas knotted the game with 3:18 left; then Winston's bucket with just under 2:00 left put the Fire in control for good, allowing SEU to record their first win over the Bobcats in Miami in program history.

Winston led all scorers with 29 points, and added four assists, three steals, and three rebounds. Caleb Konieczny added 15 points, going a perfect 3-of-3 from bonus range. Jordan McCloud chipped in 11 points and a pair of rebounds. Brandon Moore recorded a team-high six rebounds.

Southeastern returns to Sun Conference play next Saturday, when they host Warner University.
