Defensive Struggles Plague Men’s Basketball

HIALEAH, Fla.- Southeastern slipped up to Florida National in a road test 87-73 on Tuesday night, with the hosts hitting on better than half of their shots from the field.

The Fire (4-2), started quickly, scoring the first seven points of the contest, but the Conquistadors battled back to tie the game with seven straight points of their own, forcing a 7-all deadlock at the 16:06 mark.

A 9-0 run by Florida National (6-5) gave them a 32-24 advantage with 5:34 remaining in the half. After a 3-pointer by Caleb Konieczny, the Conquistadors again went on a 9-0 run to take a 41-27 advantage with 2:54 left in the first.

A 3-pointer at the first half horn gave FNU their biggest lead of the game, 52-30.

The closest the guests would get in the second half would be 12 after a 3-pointer by Xavier Burrow with 1:13 to go.

The Conquistadors shot 50.7% from the field and connected on 10 more field goals than the Fire. They also hit 41.7% from long range, and made 14 of their 20 free throw attempts. The Fire meanwhile, hit 34.8% from the field and just 24.1% from bonus range.

Senior Andre' Winston led all scorers with 27 points. Senior Tim Mitchell recorded his second double-double in as many games with 14 points, 12 rebounds, and three blocks. Junior Larry Taylor was also in double figures with 12 points.

The Conquistadors had six players in double digits, led by John Hogan with 18 points and 12 rebounds.
