Second Half Surge Keys Men’s Basketball

Box Score

TEMPLE TERRACE, Fla.- Southeastern moved to 2-1 with an 83-71 win at Florida College on Monday night.

In the second 20 minutes, the Fire outscored the scrappy Falcons 38-31, and held them to 39% from the field after hitting better than half their shots in the first half.

"The key for us was to not let them go on momentum runs and make sure we slowed them down," said Coach R-Jay Barsh. "There were five times in the second half where we made three consecutive stops, which was big for us."

The Falcons led 46-45 with 17:48 to play in the contest, but SEU countered with a 13-4 run to take an eight-point lead with 12:21 to play. A 3-pointer by Caleb Konieczny helped the Fire take their first double-digit lead with 8:14 to go, and were able to maintain a minimum of a three possession advantage the rest of the way.

Florida College cut the first half deficit to just one with 2:19 to go, but Southeastern was able to build a five points lead at the intermission.

Andre' Winston led all scorers with 22 points, and chipped in eight assists and six rebounds. Brandon Moore recorded a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds. The Fire finished the night 54% from the field.

"We need to find other ways for Andre' to impact the game, and he did that by finding Brandon," said Barsh. "Brandon played smart and matured tonight; he realized for us to be a good team, he needed to step up."

Southeastern is back on the court tomorrow when they travel to NCAA Division II Tampa for an exhibition.
