Box Score AVE MARIA, Fla. – In a final regular season match that would solidify postseason fate, the Fire came out on top, shutting out the Gyrenes of Ave Maria, 2-0, and clinching the number six seed in The Sun Conference tournament.
"This was a game that we needed to play well and try to carry momentum into the conference tournament and the guys responded so well," said Coach Clay Roberts.
Sophomore Victor Reyes began the scoring, putting the Fire up 1-0 in the 12th minute of play with an assist from Ashton Hicks. Going into half, the Fire enjoyed a 2-0 lead after Gustavo DaSilva netted a PK in the 32nd minute.
Scoring lacked in the second half as neither team could finish despite 16 total attempts; the Fire claiming the majority (9).
"We set goals early in the season and this group of guys has pushed so hard to reach them," continued Coach Roberts. "It is now a one game season, so we enjoy today but we must regroup and prepare for the first round."
The conference tournament is set to begin on Saturday, November 8th when the Fire go head-to-head with the not yet named number three seed. The details of the match are to be determined.
