Steve Phelps

Steve Phelps, Southeastern’s third head golf coach in school history, has served in this position since July 2009.

The Lakeland native has built both the Fire men's and women's teams into national powers with both teams achieving Top 10 national rankings.

In 2013, Phelps guided the Fire men's team to the University's first Sun Conference championship in any sport and the first NAIA National Championship appearance in any sport. Southeastern won the conference title at Mystic Dunes by 24 shots with Linzy Clark earning medalist honors in a playoff.

After starting the women's team in the Fall of 2013, the Fire won their first conference title during the 2022 season with Danielle Owens claiming medalist honors in a one-hole playoff.

The men's team has made five appearances as a team in the national championship since 2013 and four times has had an all-tournament selection. Gustavo Vaccaro finished fourth at the 2016 championship.

On the women's side, the Fire have qualified for every NAIA Championship since 2017, have made the cut each year, and posted a best finish of third in 2021. The Fire have churned out six All-Americans over the last six years.

Before joining Southeastern, Phelps was an assistant golf professional at Lone Palm Golf Club in Lakeland, Florida, where he was director of tournament operations and taught lessons for five years.

From 2003 to 2005, Phelps was the general manager of Pro Golf of Lakeland. He has also been an assistant golf professional at the Tournament Players Club of Tampa Bay; Countryside Country Club in Clearwater, Florida; and Bear Lakes Country Club in West Palm Beach, Florida.

He earned his Class A PGA professional certificate in 1998 after graduating from Florida State University in 1994 with a business degree in hotel, restaurant, and club management.

Phelps graduated from Lakeland Senior High School in 1989. He and his wife, Becky have two children, Steven and Carley.
