SEU In Control of Sun Championship After Opening Day

Acadia Donovan’s dramatic 10K title, strong throws performances, and a deep finals contingent pushed the Fire to day-one lead

LAKELAND, Fla. — Southeastern women's track & field turned in a strong opening-day performance at the Sun Conference Championship on Saturday, piling up event victories, qualifying athletes across the board, and building a lead in the team standings at Tenoroc High School.

The Fire closed day one atop the standings with 97 points, well ahead of St. Thomas in second with 42, after a day defined by championship performances and depth from nearly every event group.

The tone was set early in dramatic fashion by Acadia Donovan in the 10,000 meters. Donovan delivered one of the meet's signature moments, erasing a large gap on the final lap and running down the leader over the final straightaway to claim the conference title. Her winning performance moved her to No. 9 in program history and No. 1 in the Sun Conference this season while giving Southeastern an early boost in the team race.

From there, the Fire kept rolling.

The middle-distance group produced another major highlight as Maci Mills won the 800-meter prelims in 2:14.90 to lead three Southeastern qualifiers into Sunday's final. Jaa'Ln McBride and Skyla Stevens also advanced, giving the Fire significant scoring opportunities in the event.

In the sprints, Areeyanna Bonds posted the second-fastest time in the 400-meter prelims at 56.53, moving to No. 3 in the Sun Conference this season, while McBride added another finals berth in the event.

Southeastern showed impressive depth in the hurdles as Olga Gomez placed second in the 100-meter hurdle prelims with a mark that moved her to No. 7 in program history, while Ar'Briel Scott also qualified for the final.

The Fire may have made their loudest statement in the 400-meter hurdles, where they flooded the final with four qualifiers. Bonds and Scott each won their heats, while Jessica Brown and Grace Coggins also advanced, giving Southeastern a powerful scoring presence in one of Sunday's marquee events.

Gomez added another major performance in the 200 meters, placing second in prelims in 24.07 to hit the NAIA B standard and move to No. 5 in school history. Antiana Walsh also advanced in both the 100 and 200-meter finals, continuing a strong all-around sprint showing.

The Fire were equally dominant in relay competition, winning the 4x800 relay as Joslyn Armstrong, Izzy Colebank, Riley McKinney, and Jadyn DeVerna claimed conference gold in 9:52.88.

In the field, Southeastern continued to stack points.

Aubrey Sellers captured the pole vault title in a jump-off at 2.95 meters, moving into eighth in school history, while Madison Bates matched the bar and finished tied for second to give the Fire a massive points haul in the event.

MarieAnge Moussignac delivered a huge double in the throws, winning both the shot put and hammer throw while moving to No. 6 in program history in the shot and No. 5 in the hammer. Emma Terry added to the scoring surge with third in the shot put and runner-up honors in the hammer throw.

By day's end, Southeastern had combined event titles, record-book performances, and remarkable depth to seize control of the championship heading into Sunday.

Now the Fire turn to a loaded championship Sunday with finals throughout the sprints, hurdles, middle distance, relays, and additional field events still to come. With a 55-point lead and momentum firmly on their side, Southeastern will look to finish what they started and bring home their seventh straight Sun Conference title.
