ROME, Ga. -- The No. 8 SEU Women's Tennis team took to the hardcourts this afternoon, taking on the third-seeded and No. 4-ranked William Carey at the ITA Indoor Nationals. After cruising through doubles, Southeastern held off the Crusaders, claiming a 4-1 victory.
Doubles play shaped up exactly how the Fire wanted, rolling on all cylinders. Leonie Schondlemaier and
Aurora Compagnucci struck a quick 6-1 victory on flight three, and returners
Irene Parigi and
Isabella Bolivar Garces followed suit with a quick 6-2 victory on flight two granting the Fire a 1-0 lead.
The match on flight one between SEU's
Martina Picardi and
Alessia Ciampi and WCU's No. 10 team Victoria Vieten and Isabella Lechuga was halted with the Fire's duo in front 5-3.
Singles quickly fell in favor of the Fire, with Picardi dominating line one, downing No. 3 Vieten in straight sets (6-1, 6-1).
Compagnucci took after the captain and rolled to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Lin Li-Hsien on line six pushing the Fire advantage to 3-0.
William Carey struck pay dirt next as JiAn King outlasted Garces, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), cutting the lead to 3-1.
Schondelmaier would have no more, notching a third set win, advancing the Fire through to the semifinals. Cleaning up line three, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 over the Crusaders Lechuga.
Matches yet to finish showed Ciampi down a game in the third set on line four (6-3, 3-6, 1-2), and Parigi trying to close things out in straights set but down a game on line five (7-5, 4-5)
With the win, the Fire strive forward to face the No. 2 seed and NAIA No. 3 Lindsey Wilson tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. EST.
