LAKELAND, Fla.- The Southeastern University men's soccer team took the fight to The Sun Conference first-place Keiser University Seahawks. However, a second-half goal off a corner kick was the difference, as the Fire fell to the Seahawks 1-0 at the SEU Soccer Complex Wednesday night. SEU is the only team to hold KU to just a single goal on the season.
The Fire played the contest with five defenders back, set on limiting the quality of the Seahawks' opportunities in the final third. Keiser was able to find a number of chances in the first half, however the SEU back line, specifically junior goalkeeper
Carlos Curado, stood tall. The Recife, Brazil native logged seven of his nine saves in the first half to keep Keiser off the board.
Although SEU generated just four shots, including one on frame, in the first half, the Fire were able to keep things even with the Seahawks 0-0 heading into the half.
After another solid start by the Fire defensively in the second half, the Seahawks finally broke through in the 69th minute, when Lucas Jacobs found the back of the net on a header that came as a result of a series of deflections on a corner kick.
Senior forward
Ben-Avir Espinal generated a potential game-tying shot on the target in the 87th minute, but the shot on goal was saved by Keiser.
The Fire look to close out the regular season on a high note this Saturday, as they host the Florida College Falcons for Senior Day in a non-conference contest. Match time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
