West Palm Beach Fla. – The Southeastern men's soccer team dropped its conference opener Wednesday afternoon on the road 3-2 to the Keiser University Seahawks.
The Fire were aggressive from the onset of the match, rattling off four shots in the first ten minutes of play. The offensive charge paid off early, as the Fire struck first in the 17
th minute on a strike from senior forward
Gerritson Craane, his third goal of the season.
However, the Seahawks responded quickly, as senior forward Alex Babiolakis netted one in the 19
th minute to tie things up 1-1. Keiser took a 2-1 lead in the 27
th minute on a shot by junior forward Reece Weldon that was deflected off a Fire defender's shin. The Fire out-shot the Seahawks 3-1 for the remainder of the half, but trailed at intermission 2-1.
Sophomore forward
Jake Van Der Luit intercepted a pass and rifled one in the top half of the net to tie things up in the 58
th minute. The score was Van Der Luit's fourth of the season.
The Seahawks responded to the Fire goal once again, as Reece Weldon completed a four point night with a goal in the 69
th minute to give Keiser the 3-2 advantage. Southeastern attempted to battle back but were only able to register one shot for the remainder of the match.
With the loss, the Fire fall to 3-6 on the season. SEU will look to bounce back as they continue conference play. They travel to take on Johnson & Wales University on Saturday at 3 p.m.
